Students from Mt Maria College recently competed in the Lions Youth of the Year Club Final for the Lions Club of Enoggera, a prestigious event for youth designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership. Year 12 Mt Maria student Zara Grlj was the winner of the Club Final and will now advance to the next round of the competition, a huge achievement that the College is immensely proud of.
Students Samantha Bond, Kai Gampe and Michael Orman also received awards for public speaking, and Josh Vella, Abbey Hyde and Maddie Brennan also attended and gave it their best shot. Acting Cultural Program Leader, Ms Lisa Rachow, said that they students left a lasting impression on the judging panel.
"The students each did a terrific job and made the College very proud," Ms Rachow said.
The Lions Youth of the Year competition is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community. A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is sought in its potential winners. Past Lions Youth of the Year entrants include former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd; Peter Beattie, a past premier of Queensland; the ABC’s Sabra Lane and Senator Simon Birmingham.
